THREAD VEINS

Thread veins are tiny veins that appear most commonly on the cheeks, nose and legs. Small thread veins are red, but larger ones look purplish. They have many names, including:
  • spider veins
  • broken veins (not an accurate name, because they are not actually broken)
  • capillary veins.
Normally, the tiny veins in the skin are invisible, but in some people they expand and show through the skin. One cause of this is too much exposure to the sun over the years. Another is pregnancy or oestrogen treatment. They may also be inherited. Thread veins can sometimes be a sign of rosacea, a skin condition, or can result from overuse of steroid creams. Thread veins are more obvious after mid-life, when the skin becomes thinner and loses some of its collagen.

There are many cosmetic problems associated with the network of arteries, veins and capillaries that keep the skin supplied with blood. Thread veins (or telangiectasia) are small superficial red, purple or blue veins which may appear anywhere on the body, but most commonly on the face and legs. Thread veins occur when the vein dilates and become large enough to be visible through the skin. They are classified according to their appearance as linear, branching or spider telangiectasia. Facial Thread Veins are usually treated with Intense Pulse Light.

Prominent unsightly leg veins are a very common problem. Causes include prolonged standing, pregnancy, obesity, hormones and genetic make-up.

Leg veins are divided into varicose veins, reticular veins and thread veins. Varicose veins are treated surgically, so treatment is therefore not available  at Claremont Skin Clinic. We do however offer a combination of intense pulsed light (IPL), and sclerotherapy to ensure optimal treatment of both reticular veins and thread veins. There is no single effective treatment for all leg veins, so superior results are obtained with combination therapy.
